    <title>Excel Software Ships WinA&amp;D 8 Software Design Tool</title>
    <link>https://www.modernanalyst.com/Resources/News/tabid/177/ID/3826/Excel-Software-Ships-WinAD-8-Software-Design-Tool.aspx</link>
<description>Excel Software announced WinA&amp;amp;D 8.0 for project managers, system analysts, software architects, app designers and programmers. WinA&amp;amp;D integrates requirements management, system and software design, code generation and flexible report building. Version 8.0 adds PERT charts for project managers to organize, schedule and coordinate tasks within a project. Modeling and interface enhancements have been made through the tool which comes with a new manual set, lower prices and lifetime or subscription licensing.

A PERT chart is a diagram with nodes representing tasks connected by directional links that represent dependencies. Each node contains a brief task description, estimated completion time, assigned person plus start and end dates. The project manager can designate holidays, enter employees and assign vacations. When choosing a start date from the popup calendar, the end date is automatically assigned based on task duration and non-workdays with instant notification of overlapping task assignments or dependencies across any number of scheduled projects.

The master calendar allows a project manager to flip through each month to review the holidays, weekends, vacations and scheduled activities of all employees. PERT charts can be integrated with other project diagrams, dictionary and requirements and included in generated project reports.

WinA&amp;amp;D supports UML for object-oriented design, structured analysis and design, data models for database systems and real-time, multi-task design. It also includes screen models, flow charts, system models with simulation and BPM. WinA&amp;amp;D is scalable to large projects, multiple users, distributed team development and can integrate thousands of documents across the development process.

A software designer can choose the best mix of software models and notations for their specific development project including process, data, class, state, structure, object and task models. In addition to language independent models, source code can be generated from models or models created from code. Supported programming languages include C++, C#, Java, Delphi, Xojo, PHP, Ada, SQL, C, Pascal, Basic and Fortran.

WinA&amp;amp;D supports requirement definition, traceability plus user-defined views, queries and reports for managing requirements. The tool includes scriptable and ad hoc reports that cover all models, dictionary, requirements and text documents.

    <title>MacA&amp;D and WinA&amp;D Add Screen Models</title>
    <link>https://www.modernanalyst.com/Resources/News/tabid/177/ID/3186/MacAD-and-WinAD-Add-Screen-Models.aspx</link>
<description>Excel Software announced a new Screen edition of MacA&amp;amp;D 4.2 and WinA&amp;amp;D 7.2 with screen modeling capabilities. Draw screen prototypes of Desktop applications, Mobile apps or websites. Click the Browse tool and bring your prototypes to life with editable fields, navigation buttons, selectable menu commands, tabbed panels, dynamic dialogs, calculations, timer controlled events, embedded video, sound, live web pages and scriptable user interactions.

A Screen model document contains a stack of named screens with widgets added from a tool palette. Palette tools include Captions, Fields, Buttons, Menus, Organizers, Text, Polygons, Shapes and Symbols. To draw a prototype, simply select a tool, click on a screen to add an object and customize it with a Properties dialog that is presented. Drag, size, cut and paste objects on screens to build a prototype. Add buttons, menus or toolbars that link screens together.

The Properties dialog for Field, Button, Menu and Organizer objects has a Script panel to define scripting commands that execute when a user clicks that object on the screen or hovers over it with the Mouse cursor. Mockup basic screen design of applications or websites without scripting or add as much dynamic behavior as desired with a powerful scripting engine that includes scripting tags for variables, calculations, math functions, file management, procedures, video, sound, Internet, timers and conditional logic.

Switch from draw to browse mode with a button click. A UI designer can quickly experiment with screen layouts, navigational features and dynamic behavior in the user interface. By eliminating the build process, the always live prototype allows the designer to instantly see and refine the application or website to accomplish in minutes what would otherwise require days or weeks of effort by a skilled software developer.

The new Screen modeling capabilities are available in a Screen edition of MacA&amp;amp;D and WinA&amp;amp;D and fully integrated into the Desktop and Developer editions. MacA&amp;amp;D and WinA&amp;amp;D support flow charts, the full 14-diagram UML 2.2 notation for object-oriented design, structured analysis &amp;amp; design, data modeling, Business Process Models (BPMN 2.0), system models with simulation and real-time, multi-task design. The integrated environment includes data dictionary, requirements management, code generation, reengineering and scriptable reports.

MacA&amp;amp;D 4.2 runs on Mac OS X 10.7 or newer computers including Yosemite. WinA&amp;amp;D 7.2 runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1 computers. MacA&amp;amp;D and WinA&amp;amp;D are available in four Single User editions and Site License editions for added team capabilities. The Screen edition is $195, Standard edition is $495, Desktop edition is $995 and Developer edition is $1595. The product includes printed and PDF user guides and a library of free demonstration and training videos on the vendor website.

<title>Capture Software Design from Source Code</title>
    <link>https://www.modernanalyst.com/Resources/News/tabid/177/ID/2664/Capture-Software-Design-from-Source-Code.aspx</link>
<description>Excel Software announced WinTranslator 4.0 now handles Visual Basic, Xojo, supports the latest Java and Android programming plus has new Delphi enhancements. MacTranslator 3.0 has enhancements for Objective-C in Xcode, Xojo, RealBasic, Java, Delphi and C++. Both tools increase capacity and add progress indicators to process large projects with thousands of code files, folders and namespaces.

WinTranslator running on Windows scans source code to extract data. That data is imported into the WinA&amp;amp;D modeling tool to automatically generate class diagrams, structure charts and data models. The project dictionary is populated with design details like data types, method arguments, descriptive comments and links from model objects to associated source code. Likewise, MacTranslator on Mac OS X extracts data for use in MacA&amp;amp;D.

WinTranslator and MacTranslator are highly scalable, fully automated tools that support dozens of programming languages and dialects. Models and dictionary information can be generated from legacy source code, class frameworks, open source and example projects. A single window provides a step-by-step process to quickly identify the code folders, language and options to document an unfamiliar project.

WinA&amp;amp;D and WinTranslator on Windows provide:

* UML Class Models from Visual Basic, Xojo, RealBasic, C++, C#, PHP, Java, Delphi or Ada
* Rich Data Models with Indexes, Triggers, Primary and Foreign Keys from SQL Schema
* Structure Charts from Procedural C, Pascal, Basic, PHP or Fortran

MacA&amp;amp;D and MacTranslator on Mac OS X provide:

* UML Class Models from Xojo, RealBasic, C++, Objective-C, PHP, Java or Delphi
* Rich Data Models with Indexes, Triggers, Primary and Foreign Keys from SQL Schema
* Structure Charts from Procedural C, Pascal, Basic, PHP or Fortran

Both OS environments support:

* Multi-Level Diagrams with Objects Linked to Associated Source Code for Browsing
* Data Types, Arguments, Namespaces and Comments Captured from Code
* Project Scalability to Millions of Code Lines Across Thousands of Files and Folders
* Automated Structure Chart Generation from Source Code for Each Thread of Execution
* Windows, Mac or Linux Line Endings Processing or Conversion

When a developer identifies the code folders, language and options, WinTranslator or MacTranslator generate a project file of commands, then process those commands to output a text file of data. That data is imported into WinA&amp;amp;D or MacA&amp;amp;D to populate the data dictionary and generate a stack of diagrams that reflect the code structure. WinA&amp;amp;D and MacA&amp;amp;D have options to control code organization into diagrams, presentations options or identification of execution threads for representation in diagrams. Once desired options are selected, the process requires very little human effort.

WinTranslator 4.0 at $495 runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8. MacTranslator 4.0 at $495 runs on Mac OS X 10.6 or later. Both products include tutorials, help system plus printed and PDF User Guide. The Excel Software website includes a free video library that demonstrates software design and code reengineering for popular programming languages and environments.

    <title>Excel Software Ships WinA&amp;D 7 for Software Design</title>
    <link>https://www.modernanalyst.com/Resources/News/tabid/177/ID/1959/Excel-Software-Ships-WinAD-7-for-Software-Design.aspx</link>
<description>Excel Software announced WinA&amp;amp;D 7.0 for requirements management, system and software design, code generation and flexible report generation. The new software adds flowcharts, general enhancements to all diagram types and scriptable reports, advanced DFD features and the ability for large projects to use multiple data dictionaries. Any diagram object within any diagram type can be linked to any foreign document for easy navigation.

A flowchart is a diagram consisting of nodes and lines that shows how an algorithm or process works. WinA&amp;amp;D implements commonly used flowchart notation plus the ability to integrate the diagrams with a data dictionary, requirements traceability, report generation, diagram import/export features and navigational links between other diagram types. WinA&amp;amp;D adds flowcharts to a wide range of supported design diagrams including system models, task diagrams, process models, data models, class models, state diagrams and tables, object models, structure models, timing diagrams and the full 14 diagram UML 2.2 notation.

The icon manager within all diagram editors has been enhanced to support picture icons that can easily be added to a document from the clipboard or a variety of image file formats. Crisp icons with transparent backgrounds can be used on all diagram types and within many diagram objects including nodes of a flowchart.

Multiple data dictionary documents in a design project enable large or geographically dispersed development teams to work independently within an integrated project. Developers can work with separate dictionary documents or open multiple dictionary documents at once to generate project wide custom reports. The Compare Dictionaries feature allows two dictionary documents to be compared side by side and selected entries to be copied or moved between documents.

Advanced features have been added to process models like the display of formatted dictionary data on diagrams. Dictionary editing changes are instantly reflected across diagrams. A DFD process can link to a child diagram within the same document or in a different DFD document. A project may use multiple diagram or dictionaries documents with verification and balancing commands working across documents.

WinA&amp;amp;D 7 runs on XP through Windows 7. The Standard edition is $495, Desktop edition $1195 and Developer edition $1995 with Site Licenses available. WinA&amp;amp;D includes printed and PDF user guides.
